Chapter 10 – Natalie

I took my time getting ready. The shower was nice, and I knew that there was no chance it was going to run out of hot water any time soon. My shower wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t big and open with a shower head directly overhead, making me feel like I was standing in a waterfall.

If I was going to be on the clock for this night, I was going to take my time and enjoy myself. I threw on my tunes and let myself have fun. This might be the only bit of enjoyment I would have if Jonas’s attitude toward me was anything to go by.

He seemed distant, like he didn’t want me there, like he just had to have me for this ball. Which I supposed was right. So why should I have expected anything different?

Because of that kiss.

That kiss had had me all sorts of hot and bothered for the rest of the evening the night before. I couldn’t understand how it happened or what it meant. And then for him to just leave money on the table like that ... Was that how the job worked? Did I just get paid for any little thing I did?

I had spent the entire night thinking about it. I couldn’t think about anything else. Maybe he hadn’t paid me for the kiss. Maybe that was just poor timing and he was paying me for the time he took up that evening? But he shouldn’t have paid me for that. That money should have gone to Mr. Orloff. Mr. Orloff had very specifically said that we didn’t deal with any of the transactions. It kept us safe from getting robbed, for one. And for another, it kept us from getting busted. It wasn’t exactly a legal profession in the state of California.

I wanted to believe that was what had happened, that he was paying me for my time. But what if he wasn’t? What if he was paying me because he kissed me? Then that made me just a girl who didn’t give out her affection freely.

I had grappled with working for Harmony since I had been told that I could have a trial run at the job. It hadn’t really become real until I was sitting there with Jonas, until he put that money down. Logically, I knew what I was getting into, kind of. But when I saw that money on the table, it really hit me. That was how I was going to be earning my income from now on.

What did that mean for my dating life? Like, my actual dating life?

And with that question, my thoughts always went to Jonas. It was so confusing knowing that he was a client, yet knowing that I was meant to interact with him like I knew him. I was meant to flirt with him, and be into him, and make other people believe that about us. It was going to be hard not to get carried away with that.
